What is Massage?

The word massage in our language is derived from the Arabic words “mass” meaning to touch and “massein” meaning kneading in Greek. Massage; mechanical and nervous (reflex) stimulation of the skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscles, internal organs, metabolism, circulation and lymph systems for therapeutic purposes; It is a method of increasing regional blood circulation with various blows and rubbing, expanding the vessels and providing more blood to the tissue. Physiological and psychological effects are created in the organism with systematic manipulations by mechanically stimulating soft tissues with massage. Hand, electricity, water, etc. on the body surface. Through it, treatment, care and relaxation are provided.

Massage is not a pleasure or a luxury, it is a medical necessity and a preventive medical treatment that should be taken at regular intervals.

Massage can be applied in the dissolution and removal of scar tissues and adhesions, in cases of muscle spasm, tendonitis, insomnia and neurasthenia, muscle cramps and injuries after the acute phase, migraine, tension-type and hypertension-related headaches, painful menstrual periods, constipation and painful points.

Two effects occur during massage applications. The first of these is the acceleration of blood circulation in the application area, in some cases the whole body and in some cases in certain regions, with the increase in temperature, the other is the increase in the release of some hormones in the body with the pressure applied to certain areas and the regulatory effects of these hormones.

Since the vena (vein) system is operated 4-20 times faster during the massage, the help of the massage to the heart and veins is extraordinary, since it is easier to transport the dirty blood to the heart.

Since the lymphatic system and hormonal system are triggered by massage, the therapeutic substances in the body are transmitted to the massaged area and work, thereby increasing the body's resistance to diseases and many serious diseases in the initial stage can be treated.

Perhaps the most important point emphasizing the necessity of massage is its ability to prevent many serious health problems from occurring.

Since endorphin, which is a natural drug produced by the body and is more effective than morphine, is released during the massage, extraordinary relaxation is provided to the person receiving the massage; In a psychological sense, it is also possible to see massage as an antidepressant and psychological therapy with no side effects.

The first known applications of massage BC. It is known that it was made in China and India in 3000 BC. The first known written sources on this subject were handled by ancient Greek physicians. The word “massein” in ancient Greek meant kneading. As it is known, the most obvious manipulation of massage is kneading. From that period to the present, massage is an activity that has been applied in daily life for the purpose of relaxation and relaxation. In addition, the therapeutic properties of massage have been used for centuries.

Indian, Chinese, Persian, Greek and Egyptians used massage for different purposes. The word origin of massage dates back to these ancient civilizations. The words "masser" in Hindi, "mess" in Arabic, "meshes" in Hebrew, and "massein" in Greek mean stroking and kneading. In ancient times, massage oils were prepared with fragrant herbs mixed with olive oil in Aegean civilizations. Homer stated in the famous Iliad Odyssey that the heroes rub their bodies with fragrant oils after washing. Starting from Ancient Greece, during the Roman Empire, massage was also used, especially during the Olympic games and all kinds of sports events. At that time, athletes were rubbed with preparatory oil before the match.

In our culture, "massage" was done in the form of scrubbing, arm and leg stretching, and sometimes bumping, mostly in Turkish bath culture.

Although all of the massage techniques that are known all over the world today are of eastern origin, they were introduced to the world by western culture and became known by the westerners in the last 50-60 years.

The classical massage applied today (Russian-Swedish massage) started to take shape especially at the beginning of the 19th century, and in the last period of the century, characteristic massage manipulations were defined by Hoffa. Basic massage movements classified as Euphrates, Petrissage, Friction, Percussion and Vibration have been developed and various methods have been applied. Since the foundations of massage techniques applied today are based on these five manipulation techniques, classical massage forms the basis of all other massage techniques.

Massages from the Far East have survived thousands of years ago, as practices that outweigh the spiritual qualities to preserve the harmony in the body-spirit-thought triangle rather than the western technique. In addition to the tactile effect created on the body, especially with the aromatic oils used, the idea of creating an effect with scent gains weight.

In our country, real spa culture has a privileged position with its own characteristics, largely settled with hot springs and Turkish baths. However, unfortunately, this rich culture fell out of favor over time, and the concept of spa was imported from the west and an interest in a completely different area began. However, SPA (sanus per aquam), which means health that comes with water, already exists in Turkish bath culture, all that needs to be done is to be brought to the forefront and to be developed by overlapping with today's expectations.
